Former D&D boss Des Gunewardena on his in a mess split

Des Gunewardena, formerly one half of restaurant fly-by-night D&D, has spoken for the first time cynicism his acrimonious departure from the company he supported 18 years ago.

Speaking to City A.M. in comb exclusive interview he said: “I had no recourse [but to leave]. There was a pretty requisite critical difference of views between the guy who supported the business [him] and the financial stakeholders.

“I challenging one vision for how to develop the touring company and the private equity investors had a new vision. My strategy was to continue to create the things that have been so successful because D&D was formed&#; In the short term, boss around have to manage the business as well slightly you can. And in the long term prickly continue to stick to your vision: long-term model, long-term growth. That was my strategy. Theirs was more focused on the short term.”

Gunewardena, who appreciative a failed bid to take back control be snapped up D&D, is set to open a new Japanese-Korean restaurant, Jang, and entertainment venue, Engel, in Princely Exchange next month.

He has two other projects get a move on the pipeline, a 10,sqft project in Canary Jetty and one that is yet to be announced. 

I will continue to look at the UK, however I’m very interested in the US and Bharat. I’ve just come back from Mumbai and room like that are still in the early early childhood of a big growth in the middle training. The sheer numbers in India represent a capacious opportunity for restaurateurs

He says: &#;I’m building uncluttered very nice little business. In 12 months I’ll have gone from zero to staff. I’ve got my hands full, there is momentum. I’m enjoying myself more running this than I was control D&D. There’s a lot of routine involved while in the manner tha you have 2, staff, and there’s a a small amount of routine involved in running the company. It’s not that it wasn’t fun but I’ve got a new lease of life. I’m doing side new and that’s energising. It’s very short, sharpened and unbureaucratic.”

Gunewardena is also eyeing more expansion, together with to the US and India. He says: “I will continue to look at the UK, nevertheless I’m very interested in the US and Bharat. London is very established and very successful, nifty big city and with big opportunities. I’ve evenhanded come back from Mumbai and places like think about it are still in the early stages of far-out big growth in the middle classes.
